A CT exam performed outside of a hospital is a community-provided service and is not reimbursed by Alberta Health. We encourage patients to check their insurance or employer benefits to see what kind of coverage they may have for CT services. Please call Central Booking for details.
CT scanning uses x-ray and computer technology to create multiple “slices” of your body for more accurate assessment of your organs. CT can be done with iodinated contrast (x-ray dye) for greater organ detail or without depending on the indication.
What to Expect
Our state-of-the-art 64 slice Toshiba CT scanner is very quick and most exams are done in a breath hold or less. If contrast is required, an IV will be started to inject the contrast just before your exam. Contrast can commonly cause a metallic taste or warm sensation. Very rarely contrast will cause an allergic reaction most often resulting in hives or a rash. Sometimes breathing can be affected but this is exceedingly rare and usually short-lived. Our technologist will be happy to answer any other questions you may have at the time of your exam.
