Understanding Alberta’s New Preventative Health Testing Announcement: What It Means for Insight Medical Imaging Patients

Insight Medical Imaging X-Ray

Recently, the Government of Alberta announced details regarding Preventative Health Testing, outlining legislative and policy changes intended to allow Albertans access to certain diagnostic screening tests without a practitioner’s referral.

We know many of our patients have questions about what this means for booking appointments, accessing screening services, and navigating their healthcare. We want to provide clear transparency regarding our current operations and what you can expect in the future from Insight.

Our Current Stance & Operational Status

  • Insight Medical Imaging is not currently offering screening services without a requisition from a referring physician or healthcare practitioner.
  • Exception: We continue to participate in the existing Screen Test Alberta self-referral mammography program for eligible patients age 45-74.
  • We will continue to accept patient-pay MRI and CT exams with a practitioner’s requisition.

What’s Next? We Ask for Your Patience

Our leadership is actively reviewing our ability to operationalize this new provincial policy effectively and are asking for the public’s patience as work continues to understand the implementation process.

How to Book Your Imaging Appointment

If you require screening or diagnostic imaging exam today:

  1. Speak with your practitioner: Discuss your symptoms, family history, or screening goals with your primary care practitioner.
  2. Obtain a requisition: If appropriate, your practitioner will issue you a requisition form for diagnostic imaging.
  3. Book your appointment: Once we receive your requisition form, contact us and we will assist you in scheduling your exam.

We appreciate your patience as these provincial changes are implemented. Our priority is continuing to provide safe, timely, and high-quality diagnostic imaging services. We will share updates as soon as additional information becomes available.

Although the Government of Alberta announced that, effective July 31, 2026, Albertans may be eligible to access certain preventative health screening tests without a referral, Insight Medical Imaging continues to require a requisition from a referring physician or healthcare practitioner at this time.

The exception is our existing self-referral mammography program for eligible women 45 to 75 years of age through Screen Test Alberta.

Our leadership team is actively reviewing the provincial changes and how they will be implemented. We will update this page as more information becomes available and any changes to our booking process are made.

No. At this time, our referral requirements have not changed. A requisition from a physician or healthcare practitioner is still required for diagnostic imaging appointments, with the exception of eligible self-referral screening mammograms through Screen Test Alberta.

While the Government of Alberta has announced changes to preventative health testing, healthcare providers require time to review provincial guidance and implement new operational processes safely and effectively. Until those processes are in place, Insight Medical Imaging will continue to require a requisition for screening and diagnostic imaging services.

Yes. Women 45 to 75 years of age who meet the eligibility criteria can continue to book a screening mammogram without a requisition through the existing Screen Test Alberta program.

No. Insight Medical Imaging continues to require a requisition from a physician or healthcare practitioner for all patient-pay MRI and CT examinations.

Our leadership team is actively reviewing the Government of Alberta’s Preventative Health Testing initiative and assessing how these changes can be implemented across our clinics. At this time, we do not have a launch date. We are committed to keeping patients informed and will update this page as soon as additional information becomes available.
