Service Update: Patient-Facing Result Letters in Electronic Radiology Reports

We are pleased to announce the launch of patient-facing result letters integrated directly into screening mammogram radiology reports.
This initiative represents a collaborative partnership between the Alberta Breast Cancer Screening Program (ABCSP), the Alberta Society of Radiologists (ASR), and Insight. Starting September 28, 2026, patients who undergo their screening mammogram at one of our clinics will receive a simplified summary of their results alongside the full clinical report, accessible through your AHS MyChart and Alberta MyHealth Records.
We have generously committed to supporting this initiative with ABCSP and ASR. This year, ABCSP aims to expand this enhanced communication approach to additional community radiology groups across Alberta, helping ensure patients receive clear, timely, and accessible information about their breast health. We are excited to be part of this new initiative.
What does this mean for you?
If you have a screening mammogram at Insight Medical Imaging on or after September 28, 2026, your results will include two components:
1. A patient-facing result letter
This is a simplified summary written to help you understand the outcome of your screening mammogram. It may include information about your result and any recommended next steps or follow-up.
2. Your full radiology report
Your full radiology report contains the detailed findings from the radiologist and remains the complete clinical report used by your healthcare providers for clinical decision-making.
The patient-facing result letter does not replace the full radiology report or advice from your healthcare provider.
Where will I find my results?
Your results will be available electronically through Alberta’s digital health tools, including:
AHS MyChart
MyChart provides AHS patients with secure access to health information from their Connect Care record, including diagnostic imaging results.
MyHealth Records
MyHealth Records provides Albertans with access to personal health information. Diagnostic imaging reports, including mammograms, can be viewed through the platform.
If you already use MyChart or MyHealth Records, you can continue using your existing account to access your health information.
We understand the importance of maintaining clinical context and nuance in diagnostic imaging. As such, the full radiology report remains the definitive source for clinical decision-making. The patient-facing letter serves as an additional communication tool to help patients better understand their health information.

Not necessarily.
Sometimes additional imaging is recommended because the radiologist needs to take a closer look at an area seen on the screening mammogram or needs additional information to fully assess a finding.
A recommendation for additional imaging does not by itself mean that cancer has been found.
If additional testing is recommended, your healthcare provider or imaging team will provide information about the next steps.
Medical imaging reports can contain technical terminology that may be difficult to understand without a medical background.
The new patient-facing result letter is intended to provide screening mammogram results in clearer, more accessible language while continuing to provide the detailed radiology report to healthcare professionals.
This initiative is being introduced as part of the Alberta Breast Cancer Screening Program’s broader work to make breast cancer screening information easier for Albertans to access and understand.
The new patient-facing result letter applies to screening mammograms performed at Insight Medical Imaging beginning September 28, 2026.
If you are having a diagnostic mammogram or another type of breast imaging, the information you receive may be different depending on the type of examination and your clinical circumstances.

For Albertans at average risk of breast cancer, current Alberta guidelines recommend regular screening mammograms every two years for women aged 45 to 74. Women aged 40 to 44 who wish to begin screening should speak with their healthcare provider, and recommendations for women 75 and older should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
If you are between the ages of 45 and 74, you can generally book a screening mammogram without a referral or requisition.

Regular breast cancer screening is an important part of detecting breast cancer early, before symptoms may appear.
