Kidneys, Ureters, & Bladder (Renal)

  • If you are having a hypertension renal scan, you must not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your exam.
    • If you are having a standard or obstruction renal scan, you may eat or drink before your exam.
  • Drink 3-4 cups of water 30 minutes before your exam to stay hydrated.
  • Your bladder may be emptied anytime before the exam – you do not have to hold it.  
  • Do not take ACE (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme) inhibitors (Hypertension, blood pressure medication) for 3 days prior to the appointment.
  • Inform the technologist if you are claustrophobic before you begin your exam
  • Inform the technologist if there is any chance you may be pregnant or if you are currently breastfeeding.
  • Please arrive 1 hour prior to your scheduled appointment, bring your requisition (unless your physician already submitted it on your behalf), Alberta Health Care card (or out of town province health care card), and photo identification with you to your exam!
  • This exam requires a radiopharmaceutical injection. For breastfeeding patients, click on the link for recommended breastfeeding guidelines.
