Abdominal MRI
Abdominal MRI is performed to evaluate structures of your abdomen, below you diaphragm and above your pelvis. This can include internal organs such as your liver, gallbladder, biliary tree, pancreas, spleen, adrenal glands and kidneys. It can also include evaluation of your abdominal lymph nodes, vasculature, bowel, fluid and even your abdominal wall. Your MRI will be tailored to the specific questions we are trying to answer based on your history. During imaging, you will be asked to hold your breath for short periods of time to ensure high-quality images.
Cost
Alberta Health Services does not cover private MRI services outside of the hospital. For current pricing, please refer to our MRI Price Guide.
The need for contrast is determined by the radiologist at the time of imaging if it is determined that it is required for a proper diagnosis. The need for contrast is also impacted by specific patient history.
Duration
An abdominal MRI exam typically lasts around 30 minutes.
