  • Women can self-refer without a doctor’s requisition in Alberta if they are 40 years of age or older and have had a prior mammogram with a doctor’s referral.
  • Women with any history of breast cancer are considered to be at higher risk, therefore they require a doctor’s referral and/or physical examination before their mammogram.

Exercise Stress Test

  • Important: No caffeine for 24 hours prior to each appointment (ie. coffee, decaffeinated beverages, chocolate, pop, tea, protein powders, vitamin water, etc.).
  • Nothing to eat or drink (no water) for 4 hours before the appointment.
  • If you are diabetic, nothing to eat or drink 2 hours before your appointment. Please refrain from taking morning insulin is possible and make sure to bring your insulin with you.
  • *Patients are encouraged to have a small snack before their fasting period begins.*
  • Wear a short-sleeve shirt that buttons up all the way and clean running shoes for the treadmill.
  • Continue to take your medications as normal unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

  • Leads will need to be placed on your chest, so wear flexible clothing, that can be removed from the waist up.
  • Sometimes your chest may need to be shaved or cleaned so the electrodes can be properly attached.

  • Continue to take your medications as normal unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

  • No solid food 4 hours before the exam.
  • No caffeine or exercise 12 hours before the exam (this includes chocolate, pop, tea, decaffeinated beverages, protein powders, vitamin water, etc.).
  • Beta-blocker medication (Metoprolol) is necessary to slow your heart rate prior to the exam; prescribed by your ordering doctor. Please take this as directed (usually 1 pill the night before and 1 pill 2 hours before the exam).

Virtual Colonoscopy

Meadowlark Diagnostic Imaging has everything you need for your bowel emptying preparation. It is available for pick-up at our clinic once your appointment is booked. Detailed instructions are included to ensure optimal and successful bowel cleansing.

  • Please pick up your kit at least 3 days in advance of your exam.
  • Your kit will include a low-fibre diet and medication to assist with bowel cleansing.
2 days before exam:
  • Lunch: Nutritional shake, clear fruit juice, 250ml of clear broth
  • Snack: Energy bar OR apple sauce OR Jell-O
  • Supper: Nutritional shake, clear fruit juice, 250ml of clear broth
  • Snack: Energy bar OR apple sauce OR Jell-O
  • Do not just drink water as you may feel faint.
  • You may take normal medications as directed. If you are on insulin, ask your physician about dose modifications. 
1 day before exam:
  • Breakfast:
    • Nutritional shake
    • Dissolve PICO-SALAX in a glass of COLD water stir for 2-3 minutes and let rest before drinking
    • First package of dissolved PICO-SALAX followed by 4-5 more glasses of water within the hour
    • Take first half of READI-CAT
  • Lunch: 
    • Nutritional shake, clear fruit juice, 250 ml of clear broth
    • Second half of READI-CAT
  • Snack: Energy bar OR apple sauce OR Jell-O
  • Supper (eaten before 6:00 pm): 
    • Nutritional shake, clear fruit juice, 250 ml of clear broth
    • Dissolve PICO-SALAX in a glass of COLD water stir for 2-3 minutes and let rest before drinking

Gallium Scan

  • Gallium scans are done over two separate appointments, scheduled three days apart. The first appointment involves a tracer injection and lasts about 15 minutes. The second appointment is dedicated to imaging and will last about 45 minutes. 
    • Gallium scans require a recent bone scan. If you have not had a bone scan within the last 30 days, you will be scheduled for two appointments:
      • The first appointment will include a bone scan, immediately followed by a tracer injection.
      • The second appointment for gallium imaging will take place three days later.
  • Inform the technologist if there is any chance you may be pregnant or if you are currently breastfeeding.
  • Inform the technologist if you are claustrophobic before you begin your exam.

GI Bleed

  • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before the exam.
  • No iodine or barium contrast agents one week prior to the exam.
  • Please arrive 15 minutes early, bring your requisition*, Alberta Health Care card (or out of province health care card), and photo identification with you to your exam!

Kidneys, Ureters, & Bladder (Renal)

  • If you are having a hypertension renal scan, you must not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your exam.
    • If you are having a standard or obstruction renal scan, you may eat or drink before your exam.
  • Drink 3-4 cups of water 30 minutes before your exam to stay hydrated.
  • Your bladder may be emptied anytime before the exam – you do not have to hold it.  
  • Do not take ACE (Antiotensin Converting Enzyme) inhibitors (Hypertension, blood pressure medication) for 3 days prior to the appointment.

  • Inform the technologist if there is any chance you may be pregnant or if you are currently breastfeeding.

Lung Ventilation and Perfusion Scan

  • If you are on oxygen, you will need to bring your own oxygen tank for the exam.
  • If you have not had a chest x-ray within 24 hours of your appointment, we will need to perform one with your lung ventilation and perfusion scan. Chest x-rays are done on-site and usually only take a few minutes.
  • Inform the technologist if there is any chance you may be pregnant or if you are currently breastfeeding.

Meckel’s Diverticulum Scan

  • Nothing to eat or drink (no water) after midnight the night before the exam.

MIBI Scan (Myocardial Perfusion)

  • Nothing to eat or drink (no water) 4 hours before each appointment.
  • If you are diabetic, nothing to eat or drink for 2 hours before your appointment. Please refrain from taking morning insulin if possible and make sure to bring your insulin with you.
  • No caffeine for 24 hours prior to each appointment (ie. coffee, decaffeinated beverages, chocolate, pop, tea, protein powders, vitamin water, etc.).
  • Patients are encouraged to have a small snack before their fasting period begins.
  • Wear a short-sleeve shirt that buttons up all the way and clean running shoes.
  • Please bring all prescription medications with you.
  • Continue to take your medications as normal unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

Thallium Scan

  • Nothing to eat or drink for 6 hours before the exam.
  • No potassium for 24 hours prior to exam (eg. Bananas).
  • Inform the technologist if you are claustrophobic before you begin your exam
  • Inform the technologist if there is any chance you may be pregnant or if you are currently breastfeeding.

Thyroid Scan

  • Please consult with your doctor and confirm with our booking agents if you need to discontinue any medications before your exam and for how long.  
  • Many thyroid medications must be discontinued for at least 4 weeks before the exam. You can confirm this time period with our booking agents when you schedule your appointment.
  • This is very important as thyroid medications can impact radiopharmaceutical uptake and test results.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

  • Refrain from taking NSAIDs 2 weeks prior to and 2 weeks post-injection
  • Continue low-dose aspirin if prescribed by a physician
  • Cease anticoagulation/antiplatelet therapy for tenotomy
  • Do not take vitamin E or fish oil for at least 3 days prior to injection
  • Eat a small snack 1 hour prior to treatment (to minimize vasovagal reactions)

All Other Pain Management Exams

  • Important: Please reschedule your Pain Management procedure if it is within 1 week of a COVID-19 immunization. Patients must wait 1 week between a COVID-19 immunization and a Pain Management procedure.
  • Required: Prior to your appointment, please watch the following video by clicking on your preferred language:
  • Patients having Bi-Lateral Hip, Nerve Root Block, or Epidural Steroid injections must arrange for a driver or other transportation following their procedure.
  • Patients having Facet injections or Radio Frequency Ablation are not forced to arrange for a driver, however, we recommend you find one to err on the side of caution. Procedures can be lengthy and we do not recommend you operate a motor vehicle after the procedure.
  • Most patients receiving Joint Injections or Medial Branch Blocks should be fine to return to work the same day, depending on their occupation and injection site. Most patients are also fine to operate a motor vehicle following these procedures. If you have any questions or concerns talk to your doctor or our technologist after the procedure.  
  • For spine injections please avoid chewing gum or carbonated drinks on the day of your exam. Additionally, please consult with your doctor and confirm with our booking agents if you need to discontinue any medications before your exam and for how long.  
  • Please inform us if you are:
    • Diabetic
    • On any antibiotics for any active infections
    • Are pregnant or if there is any chance of pregnancy
  • If you use Coumadin (blood thinner), please contact Pain Management directly to discuss your options.
  • If you are currently experiencing nasal congestion from a cold or allergies, or you have nasal congestion when you lay down on your back, you are required to bring an over-the-counter nasal decongestant spray such as Drixoral No Drip Original Unscented Spray to use when directed at your appointment.

  • Wear comfortable clothes.
  • For morning appointment: Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before the exam.
  • For afternoon appointment: Nothing to eat or drink 6 hours before the exam. You are allowed a light breakfast of toast, coffee or tea (no dairy products).

Heart (Echocardiogram)

  • Leads will need to be placed on your chest, so wear flexible clothing, that can be removed from the waist up.
  • Sometimes your chest may need to be shaved or cleaned so the electrodes can be properly attached.
  • Continue to take your medications as normal unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
