Breast MRI

Breast MRI is a procedure that uses radio frequencies, magnetic fields, and a computer to produce exceptionally detailed images of breast tissue. Insight Medical Imaging uses a special breast coil and dedicated software when scanning patients. Breast MRI is the leading-edge way to supplement imaging from previous mammography and ultrasound exams. It can also be used to assess chemotherapy treatment methods without exposing patients to additional radiation. Doctors also rely on breast MRI for evaluating implants for potential rupture.

Orientation

During breast imaging, you will be moved into the MRI scanner feet first, with your hands above your head. You will be face down (on your stomach), on top of a specialized breast imaging camera. If you are claustrophobic, please consult with your doctor to see if they recommend that you take anti-anxiety medication before your exam.

Cost

Alberta Health Services does not cover private MRI services outside of the hospital. The cost of a breast MRI ranges from $800 to $950, depending on the need for contrast.

The need for contrast is determined by the radiologist at the time of imaging if it is determined that it is required for a proper diagnosis. The need for contrast is also impacted by specific patient history.

Duration

A breast MRI exam typically lasts between 45 and 60 minutes. The technologist, who can hear and see you during the exam, will provide you with an emergency button so you can communicate with them throughout the procedure.
