Cortisone injections are completely free for patients. These common pain management injections are fully covered by Alberta Health Care, meaning you pay nothing out of pocket. Cortisone is one of the most effective and widely used options for reducing joint pain and inflammation, and we are proud to make this essential treatment accessible at no cost.
Insight also offers some treatments that have an out-of-pocket cost and vary in price depending on the type of product used.

FAQs
Your procedure is performed by an experienced radiologist using imaging guidance for accuracy. In most cases:
- The treatment area is marked and cleaned carefully.
- A local anesthetic is used to numb the skin.
- The radiologist guides the needle to the correct location using fluoroscopy or ultrasound.
- The medication is injected into the targeted area.
- You stay in clinic briefly afterward so staff can monitor how you are feeling.
- Most joint injections take about 5-15 minutes depending on the site, and patients are usually asked to remain in clinic for about 15 minutes after the procedure.
Results vary by individual. You may start experiencing relief immediately or within two weeks. On average, after the completion of your pain management injection(s), many of our patients experience pain relief for 3-6 months.
You may experience some initial soreness or lingering pain, which is expected to subside as the treatment begins to take effect. A slight increase in pain or numbness is possible as the anesthetic wears off. You can take pain medications until the injections start to work. Please consult your physician before taking any pain medications with your pain management plan.
After the injection:
- avoid strenuous activity for at least a day
- avoid hot tubs, swimming pools, or prolonged bathing for 24 hours
- mild soreness can happen for a short time
Serious complications are uncommon, but seek medical attention if you develop:
- worsening pain over the next several days
- fever or chills
- other signs of infection
- new numbness
Recovery time from a pain management injection(s) is dependent on the type of injection(s) performed and varies from person to person. On the day of your injection, you can perform your usual daily activities, but avoid strenuous activities.
