Screening mammograms are essential routine exams designed to detect early signs of breast cancer in women without any symptoms. These proactive checks can uncover small abnormalities that you or your healthcare provider may not be able to feel. If a screening identifies any unusual findings or changes from previous images, your healthcare provider will thoughtfully recommend a diagnostic mammogram or ultrasound for a closer look. This process helps ensure your health and peace of mind, and demonstrates the importance of staying vigilant about breast health!

Screening mammograms are routine care
Screening mammograms are a proactive way to check for breast cancer when there are no noticeable signs, and they can truly bring peace of mind when the results are normal. The great news is that most individuals who get screened do not have breast cancer; only a small number may need additional tests for further clarity.

You know your body best!
If something feels different or unusual, stay calm. Many women experience lumps in their breasts, and most of these are completely harmless. Causes can include hormonal changes, injuries, or breast cysts. The key is to reach out to your doctor, have an open conversation, and schedule a physical exam.
Add it to your routine care.
Remember, early detection is your strongest ally in the fight against breast cancer. It can lead to simpler treatment options, quicker recovery, and higher survival rates. Embrace your health journey and take those important steps towards peace of mind!
We see you. Screening mammogram FAQs.
A screening mammogram itself takes about 10 minutes, and you can expect the full appointment to be about 20 minutes. (Please note it may be longer depending on your specific exams requirements, but this is the general time frame.)
Compression plays a vital role in ensuring a thorough mammogram, as it helps to separate breast tissue, enabling the radiologist to accurately identify any small masses or changes. While it might feel a bit uncomfortable and snug, it’s typically not painful and only lasts a few seconds per image. If at any point the pressure feels too much, share your feelings with your technologist; she’ll be more than happy to adjust it for your comfort!
While no amount of radiation can ever be deemed as safe, the benefits to mammograms far outweigh the risks. Modern mammography technology employs minimal radiation, making it a safe option for early breast cancer detection. The Government of Canada regulates mammography equipment and safety standards.
It’s also important to note that breast compression during the procedure does not cause cancer or accelerate growth in existing tumors. Embracing regular screenings plays a crucial role in proactive routine care and empowers us all in the fight against breast cancer!
Breast imaging plays a crucial role in detecting breast cancer early—often spotting it up to two years before symptoms or lumps appear.
Under 40 – Breast cancer risk is low. Routine screening is not recommended unless you’re at higher risk — speak with your doctor if you have any concerns.
Ages 40–44 – You may choose to begin screening. Discuss your personal risk and the potential benefits with your healthcare provider
Ages 45–74 – Screening mammograms are most effective in this age range. Get screened every 1–2 years, as recommended by the radiologist and your healthcare provider.
Age 75 and older – Screening may still be beneficial depending on your overall health. Talk to your doctor to decide what’s right for you.
If you continue screening, the Alberta Breast Cancer Screening Program will no longer send you reminder letters to screen once you turn 75.
Due to privacy and radiation safety, only the patient is allowed in the room during the exam. If you need help translating or need a support worker in the room, please contact the clinic or speak to your technologist directly.
Your results will be available within 7 days of your exam, unless you visit our Lendrum clinic, in which results are provided same day. These results will be available via your online Alberta Health Records portal, or your doctor’s office. For screening mammograms in Alberta, you will be entered into the screening program. The results are commonly mailed within about 2 weeks.
In Alberta, women ages 45-74 can book a screening mammogram without a requisition form from a doctor or previous imaging history.
For women, 40-44 or 75+, a requisition form from your physician or a history of prior screening is required to schedule an appointment.

What to expect when you get a screening mammogram.
During your mammogram, you’ll stand comfortably in front of the mammography machine while a friendly technologist positions your breast on a gentle plastic plate. Another plate will press down softly from above, helping to flatten the breast for a clear image. While you may feel some pressure, it’s just a brief moment to ensure the images are accurate. This process will then be repeated to get a side view of the breast, and both breasts will be imaged in the same careful manner.
Once the images are captured, the technologist will take a moment to review them, ensuring everything looks good before concluding the session. It’s important to know that while the technologist can’t share the results with you right away, rest assured that one of our skilled radiologists will thoroughly examine the images and provide a report to your doctor. Remember, every woman’s mammogram is unique, reflecting the beautiful diversity of our bodies. We’re here to support you every step of the way! It’s important to follow-up with your doctor to discuss the results of your screening mammogram.
